MCPL Camera Club joins One Book One Bluegrass 2012



The 2012 “One Book One Bluegrass” book of the year is A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson.
To tie in to this statewide program, Camera Club wants your photos of the great outdoors.
For the next two months, please submit your best “outdoors” photos to mcplcameraclub@gmail.com. Please include your name and location where the photos were taken. Photos will be selected for display at both Madison County Public Library locations. Three contributors will receive a free “One Book One Bluegrass” t-shirt.
This assignment would be a wonderful excuse to revisit your favorite trails (Anglin Falls, the Pinnacles, Red River Gorge, the Appalachian Trail, etc)

Kentucky Underfoot: History and Day-Hiking in the Bluegrass Region

Join Brook and Barb Elliott, the authors of the acclaimed book Hiking Kentucky for a quick look at the history of some of Kentucky’s most fascinating trails. The Elliotts will also feature a guide to the best trails in the Bluegrass, and basic planning for successful day hikes.

Appalachian Books2Eat

Books2Eat is a yearly celebration of the birthday of famous French gastronome, Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin. Join Clark County patrons and staff in celebrating both Books2Eat celebrations and Bill Bryson’s book A Walk in the Woods by creating an edible treat with an Appalachian theme.

Entries will be available for viewing between 1 and 2:30 pm. At 2:30 a panel of judges will review the entries and award prizes and ribbons. All participants are encouraged to sample the entries following judging!

My Appalachian Trail: A Reading by Members of the Clark County Public Library’s Write Local Writer’s Club

Edible and Medicinal Plants All Around

Join Winchester-based Craig and Jennifer Caudill, owners of Bluegrass Budokai and the Nature Reliance School , for a fascinating look at edible and medicinal plants found easily anywhere in Kentucky. After a short introduction to these plants, the Caudills will lead a walk around the library’s five-acre greenspace and the surrounding neighborhood to point out examples of the dozens of plant species available.

The Woods of Your Watershed

Presented by Dr. Thomas Barnes, this webinar will depict Kentucky through the eyes of a naturalist, showcasing the unique wildflowers found across the state. The journey will begin at the highest peak on Big Black Mountain and end at the lowest elevation in Fulton County along the Mississippi River. Both unique and common wildflowers occurring in each region will be presented, along with other natural features such as arches and waterfalls. She will be presenting a program about native birds, where they live, where they go in winter, why many are in decline and how to attract them to your backyard. She will have an interesting presentation on songbirds as well.

Anderson County Public Library’s A Walk in the Bluegrass
Saturday, April 14, 2PM Wildlife Managed Area @ Palmer/Old River Road Anderson County.
APL’s Walk/hike will be located at the Wildlife Managed Area at end of Palmer Road in Anderson County. The area consists of hilly to gently sloping woodland terrain, with cleared ridge tops. The upper reaches are flat bottomlands with steep hillsides. Squirrel, rabbit, deer, quail, dove, turkey, and other furbearers can be found there. This WMA is also a waterfowl refuge area. Representatives from the Department of Fish and Wildlife will be on hand to guide the walk/hike and provide information on the wildlife, plant life, and aquatic life in the area. The DFW will also provide a pulled trailer with hay bails for anyone that would like to ride back to the parking area or has limitations. The walking trail is flat and easily manageable. Dogs are welcome on a leash. No Horses or ATV’s.

Begun in 1999, Reforest the Bluegrass is a cooperative effort among various departments of Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. Through the efforts of over 8,500 volunteers, Reforest the Bluegrass has planted more than 195,000 seedlings in the last twelve years. Terry Conners of the University of Kentucky Forestry Department will demonstrate the many ways wood is used in our daily lives. He will identify the different wood varieties in Kentucky and discuss how a tree becomes a wooden object. Participants will receive a “bubble blower,” a piece of wood porous enough to absorb a soapy liquid, to take home! Fun for all ages!

Wildflowers across Kentucky

Presented by Dr. Thomas Barnes, this live, interactive webinar will depict Kentucky through the eyes of a naturalist, showcasing the unique wildflowers found across the state. The journey will begin at the highest peak on Big Black Mountain and end at the lowest elevation in Fulton County along the Mississippi River. Both unique and common wildflowers occurring in each region will be presented, along with other natural features such as arches and waterfalls. Dr. Barnes is a Professor and Extension Wildlife Specialist in the University of Kentucky’s Department of Forestry.

Rock and Fossil Identification

Find relics of the past in your own backyard! Eastern Kentucky University Geography and Geology Professor Jack Moody will lead participants through a rural area of Madison County and demonstrate methods of rock and fossil identification in this hands-on program. Meet at the Madison County Public Library’s Richmond location at 12PM, then travel to the site, which is off of Red House Road in northern Madison County.

A Historic Walk in Madison County: Bluegrass Army Depot
